European Digital Infrastructure is Too Reliant on American Technology
The Time for Urgency is Now.
There's no mistaking it– transatlantic relations are in a crisis.
With President Trump and Vice President Vance upending decades of U.S.-European alliance– leaders across the continent are scrambling to strengthen their ties with one another. Just hours after the German election results were announced on Sunday, newly elected Chancellor Friedrich Merz signaled a shift in foreign policy, stating that Germany will prioritize “independence from the USA” in order to reinforce European security in light of the war in Ukraine and NATO's growing instability.
The rhetoric in D.C. and Brussels has turned sour. Doubt is creeping in about America's role, not just as a security guarantor, but also as a reliable trading partner and even as the self-proclaimed leader of the democratic West.
While European officials are focused on responding to the political and military consequences of Washington's new stance, one critical issue remains largely overlooked: the vulnerability of Europe's digital infrastructure and its near total reliance on American technology.
